Fall Home Organizing Tips

I’ve always wondered why spring cleaning gets all the shine, when fall cleaning is just as important. Or, actually, I should say Fall organizing (because cleaning is no fun) But the frost is upon us in the fall! Not only is it about to get cold out so we spend more time indoors, but it is also about to be the busy holiday season. Friends and family will be visiting more often and we will be spending more time home. So shouldn’t we start preparing for that now? Once November hits, who has time for anything else! So start that organizing and de-cluttering now!

… I wouldn’t leave you hanging. Here are 3 things you may not have thought about, but will save you time each day:

Grab your gear

Prepare your winter wardrobe now. And I don’t just mean the sweaters, I also mean complete outfits- from your stretchy Thanksgiving pants all the way to your New Years Eve dress. Think footwear- do you have snow boots? Warm shoes? And when is the last time you cleared out that sock drawer? Organize your closet and drawers so that cold weather items are front and forward. And as you’re organizing, also edit out pieces that no longer serve you and take a mental note of any additional items you may need to buy.

Here’s are 2 closets I recently organized for a client:

Prepare your entry way/coat closets

Entry ways become high traffic areas once the snow starts, or the entire family arrives at the same time for holiday dinner (which would be an hour late if we’re referring to my family!) Organize outerwear as best as possible, including places for hats, gloves and boots. If you have a separate entry way or coat closet,  that’s great. Pull all summer items out now. If you don’t have either, consider using furniture to create an outerwear station, even if it is just a coat rack and boot tray. And don’t be afraid to spruce up the space! What better excuse to finally update that old door mat?!

Don’t you just love this awkward under the stairs closet that I turned into a family coat closet??

Don’t be afraid to toss it

The end of the year means out with the old and in with the new. Don’t be afraid to toss, recycle, consign, donate or even re-gift. I actually just cleared out under my bathroom sink and threw away medicine that expired in 2016- true story. I plan to hit my makeup vanity next and I’m a little scared! But how much better prepared am I now? I know exactly what I have, and have space to fit all the yummy new lotions and bath kits I will probably get as gifts.

And here is my actual bathroom cabinet! I renovated my bathroom back in 2016, which is when I organized this but clearly haven’t cleaned it out since!

As you can see, I’m aiming to help you prepare for a busy season ahead. But I do also understand that many of us are busy right now! If that’s the case, let me help you take care of the organizing and come up with a system that will last. Schedule a call so we can figure out all the details!
