White Clothes After Labor Day: Store it vs Rock it
I’ve never been much of a rule follower, especially when it comes to certain fashion rules. Like that whole ‘you can only wear white between Memorial Day and Labor Day’ thing. Banishing an entire color for more than half of the year? Sounds harsh!
White can definitely be rocked year round, but there are some guidelines to help keep thing sensible. It’s really all about the fabric here, and common sense. Living in New England I would imagine one would not even attempt to wear white linen shorts or even linen pants in the chilly winter months. White wool trousers, however, are definitely chic and weather an appropriate. In general, light summery textiles like linen, eyelet and seersucker are better served for warm weather. Fall and winter being most appropriate for white wool, cashmere, fur, flannel and leather.
To take it a step further, keep layering options in mind as well. A pair of white summer shorts? Store those until the summer. But a basic white tank top can still be worn into winter layered under a sweater or cardigan.
So out with the old rule of not wearing white after Labor Day, IN with knowing how to rock your whites whenever you want! Here’s a quick guide to help determine seasonally appropriate white wear based on fabric and layering capability.
