Top 5 Tips for an Organized Closet
An organized closet is a happy closet!
1. Sort by classification not color
Hanging all ‘like’ items will help you easily grab an item from each category to layer and pair together. I recommend hanging together all tank tops, short sleeve tops, long sleeve tops, cardigans, blazers, skirt, shorts, pants and dresses. If you then wish to go a step forward and color code your wardrobe, do so within each respective classification.
2. Know what to hang vs fold
Keeping in mind that details on clothing can be missed when they are folded, and that hanging some items (like heavy sweaters) ruin them, I recommend a mixture of hanging and folding. Fold: sweaters/sweatshirts, casual tops (like solid tees and polos), jeans/khakis, and activewear. Hang: blouses, blazers, cardigans, “dressy” tees, skirts, dress pants, dresses.
3. Use uniform hangers
Hanging garments on uniform color and shaped hangers helps visually de-clutter your closet and let you focus solely on your garments
4. Make sure everything fits
We all have those “goal weight” and “someday will fit again” garments, but keeping only the wear now items that fit properly front and forward will save time (and discouragement) each time you get dressed.
5. Look for unconventional storage ideas
Pinterest is a great tool for fun and different storage and display solutions, like below where I used an Ikea kitchen rod to display the next day’s outfit. Join me on Pinterest for my favorite storage ideas and dream closet spaces!
