How to Organize your Closet in 4 Steps
“An organized closet is a happy closet”
“A cluttered space creates a cluttered mind”
I repeat these things so often I probably say them in my sleep! But I firmly believe, and studies have shown, that individuals are much more focused and productive in organized environments.
Myself for example, I sit in a clean living room with a lit candle (is that not the BEST feeling?!) writing this. An hour ago there were toys everywhere, I was in the middle of organizing my desk and my son was fighting his nap. There’s no way I could have gotten clear thoughts out in that environment, despite organizing being something that I love talking about. As soon as my son laid down, I got to cleaning and finished my desk organization product. Then sat down at an empty coffee table in a clean organized room and starting typing away. I first had to get my physical space in order before I could get my thoughts in order.
And this theory far exceeds a desk, a kitchen or a workspace. It also applies to your wardrobe and closet.
Another one of my mottos? When you feel good, you look good. What helps one to look good? Confidence. And what helps build confidence in your style selections? Knowing that everything in your wardrobe fits, looks great on, pairs well together and is effortlessly accessible. And how to achieve all of these little nuggets? By having an organized wardrobe! Knowing exactly what you have, what you feel great in and where to find it.
So let’s get started…
1.Edit
If your closet or bureau drawers are bursting at the seams, you’ve got to edit down. No excuses. Some things will have to go. (and this, for some, is the hardest part) They could be donated, thrown away, put in a bin in the basement, etc. But you’ve got to assess what you have- what you really need, duplicates, items in poor condition. Try things on to weed out items that no longer fit.
2.Sort
While you are editing, sort all like items together. For example- all tank tops, all jeans, all jackets, etc. This helps you to see exactly how much of each category you have, and determines how it should be organized. For example, if you have more items on hangers than you can fit on your current rod, or more folded items than will fit on shelves, you’ve got to asses how to make everything fit.
3.Fill
Now that you know exactly what you have it’s time to put it all back in the most organized way. This is where you come up with creative storage and functional layouts. In the example where you have more hangers than will fit on the rod, it’s time to decide can/should you add another rod or create more hanging space elsewhere? Can you fold some of the items down so everything fits? And where you already have your items separated into categories, it’s likely best to fill them into the closet this way so you know exactly what you and it’s all together.
4.Style
Make it yours and make it pretty! Be sure to add a decorative, fun orĀ you element. Just because it’s a closet doesn’t mean it can’t be decorated or have a non-clothing item inside.
