How to Choose Bridesmaids Dresses for All Body Types

It is the midst of wedding season! Once the bride has located her dream gown it is then onto the next difficult task- the dreaded bridesmaids dresses! I recently became obsessed with “Say Yes to the Dress Bridesmaids”. Oh how conflicts can arise when trying to get a group of women of different shapes and sizes to agree on a dress silhouette…then throw in a bride who’s got a specific vision for her big day and things could get ugly! To try to make things  a little easier on both parties, I’ve gathered some rule of thumb everyday dress tips that can be applied to bridal gowns as well:

  • A-line dresses are good for bridal parties with all different figures. They cover the hips, and there are typically less alterations needed
  • Dresses with open necklines are good for elongating, and can make more petite bridesmaids look taller and slimmer. Sweetheart necklines are great for this.
  • Any cut that flares away at the knee creates curves…so that may be something you want to avoid or something you want to go to depending on the total look you are going for.
  • Full figured bridesmaids would do best with asymmetrical waistlines with ruching that can camouflage and reshape the mid section
  • Dresses with elongated bodices are best for tall, slim ladies
  • Dresses with  empire waists elongate the legs to again help the wearer appear taller and slimmer
  • Halter straps are actually one of the most flattering for slimming down upper arms; one shoulder dresses can also be used.

Most of all have fun with it! The “rules” on bridal dressing have changed quite a bit in the last few years, leaning away from conformity and more towards putting your own personal spin on things. Putting each bridesmaid is a different silhouette of the same material and color dress is a huge trend now, and makes finding one overall flattering fit for everyone much easier. I am also seeing weddings where the brides are allowing their brides maids to wear LBD’s of their choice, meaning this investment in a bridal gown can also easily become part of their everyday wardrobe.
