Fashion Rules To Disobey

It’s wear white after Labor Day time!

I’m seeing all the blogs and posts about this topic. The ‘rebels’ who dare to wear their white jeans into September, and the gasps in the comments from those who swore that was sooo taboo.

Let’s talk about some of the fashion “rules” I don’t want you to abide by and why:

  1. “You can’t wear white after Labor Day”

This is an old adage from way back when where wearing white basically signified your class and social status. Only those with money could vacation for the summer and they wore white to do so. Since Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer the vacation whites were put away.  But nowadays, fashion and style have taken on all new meanings, plus, well, global warming. In my opinion, the material of your clothing is seasonal more so than the colors. (More on that) Put the white linen pants away when the weather gets cool? For sure. But keep right on wearing your white jeans into fall? Absolutely. And rock some off white corduroy pants in the winter? Yes! You get where I’m going with this?

2. “Don’t wear horizontal stripes”

Because they’ll make you look wide. Well yes, they could. Just like vertical lines can indeed help you look taller. However, this doesn’t mean avoid stripes all together. It just means combine them with other pieces or silhouettes that still compliment your bodytype. For example- don’t ditch the black and white striped top, just throw a black blazer on over it to confine the stripes and give the top a shape. OR rock a piece that creatively color blocks the stripes for the most flattering fit, like the dress below.

3. “Only wear colors that compliment your skintone”

Gasp. I know. There are certain colors that brighten your face and totally make you look awake, and there are others that wash you out. True indeed. However, I have heard way too many people say that because a certain washes them out they avoid it altogether. I’ve even had a few people tell me that they had their color charts done then got rid of everything that had that weren’t the colors recommended for them. Yikes! Tad dramatic. Don’t rule out an entire color just because it doesn’t compliment your skin tone. Instead, just don’t wear that color directly next to your face! Yellow, for example, is a tough color for many people. Maybe don’t wear only a yellow top, but do wear yellow pants, shoes, belt, purse, accessories, etc. Blush is another tough color, so here are some tips:

4. “You should organize your closet by color”

While we are on the topic of color, I am constantly perplexed when people feel they are supposed to organize their closets by color.  Where did that even start? It is less important that you have a closet that looks like a rainbow, and more important that you have a closet full of items that fit properly and compliment your lifestyle and personality. These pieces should be organized by classification- ie, all tank tops together, all cardigans together, etc- and according to the best way to store that item- ie fold, not hang, thick sweaters so they don’t get stretched out on the hanger. Once items are organized by category, or even season if you like, then they can be color coded if desired.
